An Overview on the Indoor Teaching in Beichuan of iRALL School 2019 International Doctorate Program


From Oct 24 to 27, 2019, iRALL School 2019 International Doctorate Program hold lectures in “5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake Disaster Prevention and Reduction Education Center” in Beichuan county. During the time, renowned professors from home and abroad gave lectures with the topic of scientific thesis writing, landslide physical simulation test, rock landslide induced by earthquake case study, analysis of landslide stability under earthquake condition, deep displacement analysis of slow slide slope, InSAR applications in landslide identification and monitoring and UAV applications and etc.

With the topic of “Preparing a manuscript for an international scientific journal: what editors and reviewers look for”, Prof. Janusz Wasowski introduced the main points in overview, title, abstract, main body, acknowledgement, bibliography that need to be aware of in the thesis writing, and he also comments on the key points which need to pay attention to from the angle of a reviewer specialist. This lecture is very essential for the students who just step into scientific research.

Prof. Mauri McSaveney and Prof. V. Del. Gaudio conduct computational analysis on deep displacement of slow slide slope and landslide stability under earthquake condition. Through steady mechanical analysis, the two professors sort out the factors need to be considered in the stability calculation of the two types of landslide. They fitted formulas to carry out calculation as well and verify the result by other methods.

With the topic of “Prehistoric co-seismic rockslides: criteria of identification illustrated by Central Asian case studies”, Professor Alexander Strom started from the difference between rock landslide and rock collapse induced by the earthquake and he shared many cases of rock collapse in Central Asia, explaining that to define a landside induced by earthquake needs strict investigation and analysis. They cannot be treated all the same.

Apart from indoor lectures, UAV team of State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection carry out the field assembly, operation and test flight of large-scale composite wing UAV. The demonstrated UAV can carry multiple sensors and five cameras which can be used in geological hazards quick surveying and 3D modeling. With continuous development of UAV industry, it is believed that UAV will be a powerful tool in geological disaster investigation and emergency operation.
